It was a sad day to leave Oberammengau and the nursing home that was our chalet hotel. Our taxi driver took us to Garmish. It was only about a 15 or 20 minute ride. Garmish was like Oberammengau but bigger, more noisey, more people, etc. Still a beautiful sight.
We checked in to our posthotel (the building used to be the town's post office). It's very old and historic. Once again, no a/c and we're in the middle of this unusual heat wave. Our room faced one of the busiest streets in town.....and we had to keep our windows open because of the heat. It was uncomfortable but the beauty and charm of the city and the country-side made up for any discomfort.
We checked out the town, the tourist areas, as well as a few other sights. We found the local tourist information center and learned there were NO organized tours running on Saturday or Sunday.
Disappointing! When mutter (mother) learned of this, she would NOT have it. We came this far and were scheduled to leave on Monday. What were we going to do? Mutter came to the rescue. She hired a taxi cab for the next day at a flat rate. It was very reasonable and later realized it was worth every penny because of the time it saved.
Mom tried to find the American hotel that she had stayed in while she was visiting in 2000. We learned the hotel had been demolished and a supermarket had be built in its place. Disappointing.
Again, we walked around near our hotel and found a place to eat and enjoyed what little breeze there was. Later, we TRIED to sleep.
Here are a few sights around Garmish.
