Saturday, July 10 - Linderhof

Our next destination was Linderhof, the castle that King Ludwig II used most.

It was quite a hike from the entrance to the castle. But boy was it ever worth it! This dude invented the word extravagant. WOW!

I walked around the gardens in awe as I took pictures and while we waited for our scheduled English-speaking tour to start. Of course, Mutter had to sit in the shade and rest her weary feet as I explored. The extensive and lush grounds were very well maintained in the original manner.

When the time for our tour to start, we were the only English-speaking people on this particular tour. So, we got a more “private” tour, which was quite the treat. As we walked through the rooms, I was convinced, even more, this dude was absolutely mad. It was SO over-the-top extravagant and gawdy. He was the architect of a fantasy world that he, himself, designed, created, and inhabited. He never married and became a recluse obsessed with all things of extraordinary beauty. To this day, he is still referred to as the “fairytale king.”

Almost everything at Linderhof has a solid gold coating. There were 5 kilos of gold used in the construction and remains in tact even today.
He became obsessed with French royalty and emulated much of that style. Even to the point of portraits of French royalty hanging on the walls.
I was surprised to learn that most all of the fabric in the palace was original. It was in very good repair and the color still quite vibrant.

Linderhof wasn't very big in size but made a big impression on Mutter and I.

The following photographs were taken all around the Linderhof grounds.
